Sick of the cold yet? Have you lost your tan....and packed on a few pounds? Why not go warm up in Indonesia?! While you're there, you can get that golden tan back on one of the 17,500 different islands. Plus, take a break from the boring gym and go hike some mountains or rice paddies! Don't know anything about Indonesia? Read below to learn something new!
1.) Indonesia is the 4th most populous country in the world, coming in after the United States. It's the largest country in Southeast Asia, so there's plenty of places to see and people to meet! Most people have heard of Bali (Thanks to Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray Love), but there's many other exotic islands as well.
2.) Exactly how many islands are there in Indonesia? Well.....no really knows for sure! It makes it hard to count when some islands only appear at low tide. In 2002, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space estimated around 18,300. However, the Indonesian government claims it's closer to 17,500. Out of that large number, only 8,844 have been named and only 922 have actually been permanently settled. So you'll have PLENTY of places to explore!
3.) Indonesia is home to the Komodo dragons and is the only place in the world where they can be found. One of the islands is actually called Komodo island. So make sure to get a look at these giant lizards (they can grow up to 10 feet and weigh 150 pounds). But keep your distance as it has been claimed they have a venomous bite.
4.) If huge lizards aren't your thing, how about adorable Orangutans? The islands of Sumatra and Borneo are the only places in the world to see wild orangutans. Also....while we're learning new things....did you know that the island of Borneo is shared between 3 countries? Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei all claim part of Borneo. Good thing it's the third largest island in the world!
5.) Volcanoes are definitely a thing in Indonesia, as they dominate the geography. As of 2012, there's 127 active volcanoes in the country. The worlds largest volcano, Lake Toba, is located on North Sumatra, which is the largest of all the Indonesian islands. Mount Batur is a popular volcano to hike on Bali, and is a perfect place to have breakfast and enjoy the sunrise!
This just skims the surface of all the wonderful and unique opportunities Indonesia has to offer. Hopefully you've learned something new, and peaked some interest to go explore the many different islands!
